The miraculous stone cross
A wonderful, open air, stations of the cross leads the way along the southern edge of the town to the Chapel of the Holy Cross on the Basler Strasse. Here you'll find a 13th century stone sculpture depicting the crucifixion. Tradition has that numerous people have been cured or released from hardship here. Many of the answered prayers are documented in the towns archives, especially those from the pilgrimages that take place on September 14th, the anniversary of the discovery of the cross. Today the pilgrims celebrate with a procession to the chapel on the first Sunday in May.
The legend tells of how the stone cross miraculously arrived here, carried on the rising waters of the Rhine before coming to rest on a sandbank near Neuenburg. The cross was erected in Münster but somehow always found its way back to here. Eventually a chapel was built before the gates of the town in honour of the holy cross. Over the course of many years and wars, the chapel was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. The last inauguration took place in 1964.
